Info Tech Class - 2/24/09
While I understand the benefits of social networking websites, I am afraid it is taking us away from the most effective form of communication - "face-to-face" (really, not virtually). I totally agree that online communication makes it extremely easy to stay in touch with friends and family. However, we are probably taking it too far. Sometimes we don't actually say hi to somebody sitting next to us, but we shoot him/her an instant message....that is what bothers me. I believe we should use social networking as a supplement not as a replacement for existing, more impactful forms of communication.

It is amazing how many new industries have been created by technology. The services provided by Godengo have many similarities with companies like CH Robinson, which owns little in assets, but generates billions in revenues. With increasing number of service companies, human capital is becoming indeed the most valuable of all forms of capital.

SOA - reminds me of the in-class exercise we did about the enterprise of the future. One of the characteristics our group came up with was that enterprises will be specialty firms, meaning each firm basically focuses on the core competency...every service/product is offered by the best of the breed. It is kind of demonstrated by the huge conglomerates of the 70's (of totally unrelated businesses) that had to start breaking up to survive in the 90's.

Info Tech Class - 2/12/09
As we talked about the component plans, I was amazed at how many companies - both big and small actually don't do it. It is a great way to eliminate inefficient/useless areas in a division or a company. I can probably use this for my household. I know we don't put all the money we spend to the best possible use....

It is amazing how many companies fail to do a basic analysis of if and how a new technology should be implemented. Companies could save enormous amounts of money by putting some thought up front --is SAP right for my company? what would the consequences be? Billions of dollars are wasted every year just because this simple step of forethought and soul searching is overlooked....what a shame

The discussion was quite interesting. It is clear to me that the future enterprise will be one where most of the work is done by the mind. We won't have to use our hands to operate computers or travel to have a meeting. Humans will be replaced by machines to do the physical things; humans would simply send commands from their brains. A great example is the machine that sets up pins after each strike in bowling. One sure consequence of this is.....we are all going to be fatter.
Peace.
Peace.

In the short-term, I believe outsourcing has a signigficant impact on National Security. Outsourcing opens up new channels for terrorists to access information. In a hurry to become "global" companies and geovernments lose sight of critical issues such as national security. It will take time to fill the gaps and make outsourcing "airtight" and protect companies and countries from terrorists. In the long-term, as we move towards a "world government" or something of that sort, the national security issues will sorted out...or at least get on par with the western countries.

Info Tech Class - 1/20/09
Not what I was expecting for an info. tech. class, but I loved it. It makes sense to learn about the fundamentals that are not time-sensitive, as opposed to learning specific technologies.
